James Fenimore Cooper

James Fenimore Cooper (1789–1851) was the American novelist of The Last of the Mohicans and The Pilot. The few songs scattered through his novels are usually put in the mouths of his characters; "My Brigantine" appears in The Water-Witch (1830).
