John Dickenson

fl. 1594

John Dickenson is known here as the author of three pastoral lyrics printed in England's Helicon (1600) over the initials "I. D." and "I. M.". A. H. Bullen's notes identify all three as his, from The Shepherds Complaint (c. 1594), a copy of which had been found at Lamport Hall, Northamptonshire.

Earlier guesses had given the poems to Sir John Davies, John Marston, Gervase Markham and John Donne. The three poems here are from the anthology, as printed in Bullen's 1887 edition.

  2. [Love's Thrall]
