1754–1820

William Drennan (1754–1820) was a Belfast physician and poet who helped found the Society of United Irishmen and drafted many of its addresses. He was tried for sedition in 1794 and acquitted, and is credited with the phrase "Emerald Isle".

The poems here are taken from H. Halliday Sparling's anthology Irish Minstrelsy (London: Walter Scott, 1888).
