Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas

1544–1590

Guillaume de Salluste, seigneur Du Bartas (1544–1590), was a Huguenot poet and soldier-diplomat from Gascony who served Henry of Navarre, the future Henri IV. He is remembered above all for La Sepmaine (1578), a long poem on the seven days of Creation, and for its unfinished sequel, La Seconde Sepmaine.

The Sepmaine was a European success, reprinted and translated many times within a few years. Josuah Sylvester's English version, Du Bartas his Divine Weekes and Workes, was completed in the folio of 1611, and the poem was read by Milton among others. It is held here as a work under Du Bartas, following the archive's practice for translated epics.
