Charles Wyndham, 2nd Earl of Egremont

1710–1763

Charles Wyndham, 2nd Earl of Egremont (1710–1763), was an English politician who served as Secretary of State for the Southern Department from 1761 to 1763. A single light poem, "The Fair Thief", is traditionally given to him.

The poem here is the one printed under his name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.
