Sir Gilbert Elliot

Sir Gilbert Elliot, 3rd Baronet (1722–1777), was a Scottish lawyer and politician who held office as Treasurer of the Chamber. He is remembered as the author of the pastoral song "Amynta" ("My sheep I neglected").

The poem here is the one printed under his name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.
