George Ellis

1753–1815

George Ellis (1753–1815) was an English satirist, antiquary and diplomat, editor of Specimens of the Early English Poets (1790) and a contributor to the Rolliad and the Anti-Jacobin.

The rondeau given here, mocking the salary of William Eden's commercial mission to Versailles, appeared in The European Magazine in December 1785; the Oxford Book of Eighteenth Century Verse attributes it to Ellis with a query.

  1. Rondeau, Humbly Inscribed to the Right Hon. William Eden
