1679–1737

Abel Evans (1679–1737) was an English clergyman and wit, a member of St John's College, Oxford, and an acquaintance of Pope. He was known in his own day for his epigrams and for Latin and English verse.

His best-remembered lines are the mock epitaph on the architect Sir John Vanbrugh, whose buildings included Blenheim Palace.
