Sir Richard Fanshawe

Sir Richard Fanshawe was an English diplomat and royalist who served the Stuarts in Spain and Portugal. Gilfillan says he was born at Ware in 1607 or 1608 and was in Madrid in 1666.

He is best known as a translator, notably of Guarini's Il Pastor Fido (1647/48), and he published some original poems as well. Gilfillan prints his version of a Spanish sonnet, The Spring.
