Catherine Maria Fanshawe

1765–1834

Catherine Maria Fanshawe (1765–1834) was an English poet and amateur artist and a friend of Horace Walpole. Her witty verses circulated in manuscript and were collected after her death; she is best known for her riddle on the letter H and her parody of Wordsworth.

The 2 poems here are the pieces printed under her name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.

  1. A Riddle on the Letter H
  2. An Imitation of Wordsworth
