1750–1774

Robert Fergusson was a Scottish poet born in Edinburgh, who wrote in Scots and in English and died in the city's asylum at twenty-three. Robert Burns revered him as a forerunner.

Gilfillan prints his Scots poem The Farmer's Ingle, a picture of a farmhouse evening that was one of the models for Burns's The Cotter's Saturday Night.
