Henry Fielding

1707–1754

Henry Fielding (1707–1754) was an English novelist and dramatist, the author of Tom Jones (1749), and later a London magistrate. Before the novels he wrote satirical plays and verse aimed at the government of Sir Robert Walpole.

The poem here is the one James Parton printed under his name in his anthology of English humorous poetry, where it is introduced as addressed by Fielding to Walpole.

  1. The Author and the Statesman
  2. On a Halfpenny which a Young Lady Gave a Beggar, and which the Author Redeemed for Half-a-Crown
  3. To Sir Robert Walpole
  4. To Celia
