Folquet de Marseilla

fl. 1180–1231

Folquet de Marseilla (Folquet of Marseilles) enjoyed the favour of Richard of England, Raymond V of Toulouse and Barral of Marseilles. Farnell notes that after the war against the Arabs in 1195 the poet gave way to the ecclesiastic, who persecuted the Albigensian heretics and became Bishop of Toulouse.

The verse in this selection is Ida Farnell's English version in The Lives of the Troubadours (London: David Nutt, 1896), where it stands beside a prose Life of the poet; the prose Life is not reproduced here. The dates are those Farnell prints for the period in which the poet was active, and the Old Occitan original is not included.
