John Ford

1586–c. 1639

John Ford (baptised 1586 in Devon, died about 1639) trained at the Middle Temple and wrote for the Caroline stage, both alone and with Thomas Dekker and William Rowley. His best-known plays are 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, The Broken Heart and Perkin Warbeck.

The two songs here, from The Lover's Melancholy (1629) and The Broken Heart (1633), are the ones printed under his name in A. H. Bullen's Lyrics from the Dramatists of the Elizabethan Age (1889). Songs from The Sun's Darling, which he wrote with Dekker, are filed under Dekker.
