Gaucelm Faidit

fl. 1190–1240

Gaucelm Faidit was of Uzerche in Limousin. The Life Farnell translates says he sang worse than any man alive yet made many good melodies and canzones, and became a jongleur after losing everything at dice.

The verse in this selection is Ida Farnell's English version in The Lives of the Troubadours (London: David Nutt, 1896), where it stands beside a prose Life of the poet; the prose Life is not reproduced here. The dates are those Farnell prints for the period in which the poet was active, and the Old Occitan original is not included.

  1. On the Death of King Richard I. of England
  2. Song on the Fourth Crusade
