Emanuel Geibel

1815–1884

Emanuel Geibel was born at Lübeck and became one of the most widely read German lyric poets of the mid-nineteenth century. He spent his later years in Munich.

James Clarence Mangan (1803–1849) translated this poet in his German Anthology (1845); the poems here are his English versions, as reprinted in Poems, ed. John Mitchel (New York, 1859).
