Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim

1719–1803

Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim lived for most of his life at Halberstadt. He wrote Anacreontic songs and, in 1758, the patriotic Prussian War Songs of a Grenadier, and was a generous friend to younger poets.

James Clarence Mangan (1803–1849) translated this poet in his German Anthology (1845); the poems here are his English versions, as reprinted in Poems, ed. John Mitchel (New York, 1859).
