Sidney Godolphin

1610–1643

Sidney Godolphin (1610–1643) was an English poet and Member of Parliament, a friend of Thomas Hobbes and of Lord Falkland and the Great Tew circle. He was killed fighting for the king at Chagford, Devon, in February 1643.

His few lyrics circulated in manuscript; they are among the finest short love poems of the Cavalier generation and were prized by H. J. C. Grierson in his anthology of seventeenth-century lyrics.
