Frances Greville
Frances Greville (died 1789), born Frances Macartney, was an English poet and society hostess, wife of Fulke Greville. Her "Prayer for Indifference" (1759) was one of the most admired and quoted poems by a woman of her time.
The poem here is the one printed under her name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.
