Janet Hamilton

1795–1873

Janet Hamilton (1795–1873) was a self-taught Scottish working-class poet who lived at Langloan, near Coatbridge, in the industrial west of Scotland. She learned to write late and lost her sight in her later years.

Her verse, in Scots and English, appeared in volumes from the 1860s such as Poems and Essays and Poems and Ballads; “A Ballad of Memorie”, in Scots, is the piece chosen for Women Poets of the Victorian Era (1890).
