Johann Heermann

1585–1647

Johann Heermann was born at Raudten in Silesia in 1585 and died at Lissa (Leszno) in 1647. He was a Lutheran pastor at Köben from 1611, and his ministry was disturbed by illness and by the troubles of the Thirty Years' War; he left Köben for Lissa in 1638.

His hymns appeared in collections such as Devoti musica cordis (1630). The English versions here are Catherine Winkworth's in Lyra Germanica (1855).

  1. Thou weepest o'er Jerusalem
  2. Lord! Thy death and passion give
  3. Alas dear Lord, what evil hast Thou done
