Felicia Hemans

1793–1835

Felicia Hemans (1793–1835), born Felicia Dorothea Browne in Liverpool and raised largely in Wales, published her first volume of poems at fourteen and became one of the most widely read poets of her day, in Britain and in America.

After her husband left for Italy in 1818 she brought up her five sons alone and supported them by her writing. Her best-known collections include Records of Woman (1828) and Songs of the Affections (1830), and poems such as “Casabianca” and “The Homes of England” were learned by heart by generations of schoolchildren. She died in Dublin at forty-one.
