Johann Gottfried Herder

1744–1803

Johann Gottfried Herder was a philosopher, critic and clergyman who settled at Weimar. His collection of folk songs from many nations, published in 1778–79, helped to shape the Romantic interest in popular poetry.

James Clarence Mangan (1803–1849) translated this poet in his German Anthology (1845); the poems here are his English versions, as reprinted in Poems, ed. John Mitchel (New York, 1859).
