Georg Herwegh

1817–1875

Georg Herwegh was born at Stuttgart. His Gedichte eines Lebendigen (1841) made him a leading political poet of the years before 1848; he lived in exile in Switzerland and France.

James Clarence Mangan (1803–1849) translated this poet in his German Anthology (1845); the poems here are his English versions, as reprinted in Poems, ed. John Mitchel (New York, 1859).
