Henry Vassall-Fox, 3rd Baron Holland

1773–1840

Henry Richard Vassall-Fox, 3rd Baron Holland (1773–1840), was a Whig statesman and nephew of Charles James Fox. Holland House, Kensington, was under him the centre of Whig society and of a famous literary circle; he wrote occasional verse and translations.

The poem here is the one printed under his name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.
