Ellen Sturgis Hooper

1812–1848

Ellen Sturgis Hooper (1812–1848) was a Boston poet, a friend of Margaret Fuller and a member of the circle around the Transcendentalist journal The Dial. She married Robert William Hooper, a physician, and was the mother of Marian 'Clover' Hooper, later the wife of Henry Adams.

She published very little in her lifetime; her best-known lines, a six-line poem on beauty and duty, appeared unsigned and untitled in the first number of The Dial in July 1840.
