Thomas Hull

1728–1808

Thomas Hull (1728–1808) was an English actor and dramatist, long associated with the Covent Garden theatre. Alongside his stage work, which included plays such as The Fairy Favour and Henry the Second, he published verse: A Collection of Poems and Translations, in English and Latin (printed at Bath, 1758), the legendary tale Richard Plantagenet (1774) and, late in life, two volumes of Moral Tales in Verse, Founded on Real Events (1797).

This selection gives his English verse only: the odes, songs, paraphrases and imitations of 1758 (his Latin poems and the Latin versions printed beside them are left out), the single-part moral tales and the verse addresses and introductions of 1797. His multi-part tales (Foscue, Alleyne, Cadwal, Edward and Orra) and Richard Plantagenet are placed in the Works section. Texts come from early printed editions via ECCO-TCP, with the long s modernised.
