Alexander Hume

c. 1557–1609

Alexander Hume was a Scottish poet and minister, a younger son of the Humes of Polwarth, who held the living of Logie in Stirlingshire. Gilfillan says he was born about the middle of the sixteenth century and died in 1609.

He is best known for Of the Day Estivall, a descriptive poem of a summer day published in his Hymnes or Sacred Songs (1599), here printed under Gilfillan's title Thanks for a Summer's Day. He is not to be confused with the nineteenth-century Alexander Hume also in this archive.
