Thomas Henry Huxley

1825–1895

Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–1895) was an English biologist and teacher, best known as the defender of Darwin's theory of evolution and as a master of Victorian scientific prose.

He wrote very little verse. The poem here, written for the funeral of Tennyson in Westminster Abbey on 12 October 1892, is taken from Edmund Clarence Stedman's A Victorian Anthology (1895).
