Jacopone da Todi

c. 1230–1306

Jacopone da Todi was an Italian Franciscan friar and poet who died in 1306. The Stabat Mater, the hymn on the sorrows of Mary at the Cross, is traditionally ascribed to him, as is the companion Christmas hymn Mater speciosa.

Three versions of the Stabat Mater and one of the Mater speciosa are given here, from C. C. Nott's The Seven Great Hymns of the Mediaeval Church (1902).

  1. Stabat Mater (Coles)
  2. Stabat Mater (Dix)
  3. Stabat Mater (Lindsay)
  4. Mater Speciosa (Neale)
  5. Stabat mater dolorosa
  6. Stabat mater dolorosa (Part II)
  7. Stabat mater dolorosa (Part III)
  8. Stabat Mater Dolorosa
