Richard Jago

1715–1781

Richard Jago (1715–1781) was an English clergyman and poet, a friend and Oxford contemporary of William Shenstone. He is known for his topographical poem Edge-Hill (1767) and for short lyrics such as "Absence".

The poem here is the one printed under his name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.
