Janabai

14th century

Janabai (Jani Bai) is a Marathi woman saint-poet of the 14th century, remembered as a maidservant in the household of Namdev and a devotee of Vithoba of Pandharpur.

Her songs (abhangs) draw on the labours of household life, as in the grinding-mill hymn. Macnicol's Psalms of Maratha Saints (1919) gives three of them.

  1. Pundlik
  2. Grinding
  3. The Besetting God
