Francis Jeffrey, Lord Jeffrey

Francis Jeffrey, Lord Jeffrey (1773–1850), was a Scottish lawyer, judge and critic, editor of the Edinburgh Review for nearly three decades. He wrote little verse; the lines here were written for a lady's album.

The poem here is the one printed under his name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.
