Jnanesvar

13th century

Jnanesvar (also Jnanadev or Dnyaneshwar) is the earliest of the great Marathi saint-poets, placed by Macnicol in the 13th century. He is remembered as the author of the Jnanesvari, a Marathi commentary in verse on the Bhagavad Gita, and as one of the founding voices of the devotional (bhakti) tradition centred on Vithoba of Pandharpur.

The eight hymns here are rendered by Nicol Macnicol in Psalms of Maratha Saints (1919); the first four are taken from the Jnanesvari itself, and the remainder are short devotional songs (abhangs) in praise of the divine Name.

  1. The Great Hearted
  2. The Rapture of Devotion
  3. Aequanimitas
  4. Truth
  5. "Cry Hari"
  6. The Name
  7. "There Needs Not an Appointed Hour"
  8. The Storehouse of Bliss
