Judah al-Harizi

c. 1165–1225

Judah al-Harizi (Judah ben Solomon al-Harizi, c. 1165-1225) was a Hebrew poet and translator born in Toledo, in Christian Spain. He translated works from Arabic into Hebrew, including Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed in a version that competed with Ibn Tibbon's, and he travelled widely through the Near East. His best-known original work is the Tahkemoni, a Hebrew collection of rhymed prose narratives (maqamat) in the Arabic manner, which established the form in Hebrew literature.
