Josef Jungmann

1773–1847

Josef Jungmann (1773–1847) was a Czech linguist and poet, one of the main architects of the modern Czech literary language. Bowring writes his name Joseph Jungmann and describes him as professor of poetry and oratory at the Academical Gymnasium of Prague.

Bowring notes his Czech version of Paradise Lost and his prose works. The single poem here, a song of rural contentment, is the one lyric Bowring prints in full.
