Qalandar Bakhsh Jurat

c. 1748–1809

Jurat of Delhi is described in the book as celebrated for his skill in music, astronomy and poetry; he became blind while still young and was pensioned by Nawab Muhabbat Khan and afterwards by Suleiman Shikoh. He is the author of an enormous volume of ghazals and love-poems in the modern taste, and also wrote satires on the rain, the cold, smallpox and the like.

The one piece given here is drawn from Hindustani Lyrics (London: The Sufi Publishing Society, 1919), in the English verse of Inayat Khan and Jessie Duncan Westbrook. It is a free rendering, not a literal translation, and the original Urdu poem is untitled; it is named here by its first line.
