John Keble

1792–1866

John Keble (1792–1866) was an English Anglican priest and poet, born in Fairford, Gloucestershire. He took a double first at Oxford, became a fellow of Oriel College, and served as Oxford's Professor of Poetry from 1831 to 1841. He spent most of his working life as a country parish priest at Hursley in Hampshire.

His Assize Sermon on National Apostasy (1833) is traditionally taken as the starting point of the Oxford Movement. His best-known book of verse, The Christian Year (1827), gives a poem to each Sunday and holy day of the Book of Common Prayer and was among the most widely read volumes of the nineteenth century. Keble College, Oxford, was founded in his memory.
