Thomas Ken

1637–1711

Thomas Ken (1637–1711) was an English clergyman, educated at Winchester College and Oxford, who became Bishop of Bath and Wells in 1685. He was one of the seven bishops tried and acquitted for resisting James II's Declaration of Indulgence in 1688, but as a non-juror he refused the oath to William III and was deprived of his see in 1691.

His morning, evening and midnight hymns were written for the boys of Winchester College and printed in later editions of his Manual of Prayers. The closing doxology of the morning and evening hymns, 'Praise God from whom all blessings flow', became one of the most widely sung verses in the English language.
