Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock

1724–1803

Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock was born at Quedlinburg. He wrote the religious epic Der Messias and a body of odes in classical metres that opened the way for German poetry of feeling.

James Clarence Mangan (1803–1849) translated this poet in his German Anthology (1845); the poems here are his English versions, as reprinted in Poems, ed. John Mitchel (New York, 1859).
