Theodor Körner

1791–1813

Theodor Körner was born at Dresden. A poet and dramatist, he joined the Lützow Free Corps in 1813 and was killed in action that August; his war songs, collected as Leyer und Schwert, made him a hero of the wars of liberation.

James Clarence Mangan (1803–1849) translated this poet in his German Anthology (1845); the poems here are his English versions, as reprinted in Poems, ed. John Mitchel (New York, 1859).
