Sidney Lanier
Sidney Lanier (1842–1881) was an American poet and musician from Georgia who served in the Confederate army, was imprisoned as a prisoner of war, and spent much of his short life battling the tuberculosis that eventually killed him.
A trained flautist, he brought a musician’s sense of rhythm and sound to poems such as ‘The Marshes of Glynn’ and ‘The Song of the Chattahoochee’, which celebrate the landscape of the American South.
