Edward Lear

1812–1888

Edward Lear (1812–1888) was an English artist and writer who, alongside a career as a natural history and landscape painter, invented much of the English nonsense verse tradition.

His limericks, alphabets, and songs such as The Owl and the Pussy-cat and The Jumblies, collected across several Book of Nonsense volumes, delight in invented words and gentle absurdity.
