Leconte de Lisle

1818–1894

Charles Marie René Leconte de Lisle (1818–1894) was a French poet, born at Saint-Paul on the island of Réunion, who led the Parnassian school. His major collections are Poèmes antiques (1852), Poèmes barbares (1862) and Poèmes tragiques (1884), and he was elected to the Académie française in 1886.

The two poems here are English versions from W. J. Robertson's A Century of French Verse (1895), as reprinted in Lyra Celtica.
