Henry Luttrell

c. 1765–1851

Henry Luttrell (c. 1765–1851) was an Irish-born wit, diner-out and poet of Holland House and the circle of Samuel Rogers. His chief work was Advice to Julia: a Letter in Rhyme (1820).

The 4 poems here are the pieces printed under his name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.

  1. Death
  2. On the Distinguished Singer, Miss Ellen Tree
  3. Burnham-Beeches
  4. On Samuel Rogers' Seat in the Garden at Holland House
