George Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttelton

1709–1773

George Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttelton (1709–1773), was an English politician, patron of James Thomson, Henry Fielding and Alexander Pope, and the author of verse, dialogues and a History of Henry II. He is the Lord Lyttelton of Samuel Johnson's Lives of the Poets.

The poem here is the one printed under his name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.

  1. None, without hope, e'er loved the brightest fair
  2. Tell me, my Heart if this be Love
