Sir Richard Maitland

1496–1586

Sir Richard Maitland of Lethington was a Scottish judge and Lord Privy Seal, who in old age lost his sight yet went on writing. He is remembered also as the collector of the Maitland Folio and Quarto manuscripts, which preserve much older Scots poetry.

His own verse is mostly short moral satire on the vanity of the age, the dress of town ladies and the corruption of the court and the Borders. Eyre-Todd (1892) prints six of these pieces.

  1. Satire on the Age
  2. Satire on the Toun Ladyes
  3. Na Kyndnes at Court without Siller
  4. On the Folye of ane Auld Manis Maryand ane Young Woman
  5. Aganis the Theivis of Liddisdaill
  6. Advyce to Lesom Mirriness
