Victorian
Harriet Martineau
Harriet Martineau (1802–1876) was an English writer and social theorist, born at Norwich, best known for her prose: the Illustrations of Political Economy (1832–34), Society in America (1837) and her abridged English version of Comte's philosophy. She was deaf from youth.
Her verse is slight beside her prose, but her brief hymn-like lyric “Onward” was chosen by Elizabeth A. Sharp to open Women Poets of the Victorian Era (1890). She spent her later years at Ambleside in the Lake District.
