Philip Massinger

1583–1640

Philip Massinger (1583–1640), born at Salisbury and educated at Oxford, wrote or co-wrote some forty plays, among them A New Way to Pay Old Debts and The City Madam, and often collaborated with John Fletcher, Thomas Dekker and Nathaniel Field. He was buried in London in March 1640.

Bullen thought lyric verse was not Massinger's gift; the two songs here, from The Emperor of the East and The Guardian, are the ones he printed in Lyrics from the Dramatists of the Elizabethan Age (1889).
