Cornelius Mathews (1817–1889) was a New York novelist, playwright and poet, a leading voice of the Young America movement.

Griswold included 5 of his poems in The Poets and Poetry of America (16th edition, Philadelphia: Parry & McMillan, 1855), the anthology from which the poems here are taken.
